Easy Ombre 101

The ombré nail is a classic! This aesthetic look is achieved by blending hues. It could be monochromatic, analogous, or simply just blending matching colors where they meet in the middle.

There's been a lot of questions regarding how to achieve the ombré effect with powder and gel, just powder, and just gel. So, which is best among the three? It all comes down to preference. No worries, we'll guide you through all three!

What You'll Need:

First things first, have you prepped your nails? If not, we highly recommend our article How to Prep your Nails like a Pro.

For Dip Powder

1. Prep your Nail.

2. Base Color.

Apply your base color with dip powder (How to Apply a Dip Powder Manicure). Afterward, buff your nails and dust them off with your favorite dust brush.

3.Easy Ombré Gel

Apply one coat of Easy Ombré Gel. Then, flash cure each nail with the ombré gel for 10 seconds with the Hybrid Pro (Kindly note that it may take a little longer with other lamps).

4. Clear Dip.

Quickly dip it into clear dip powder. (optional)

Note: The clear powder helps the color blend nicely by adding to its translucency (especially at the faded area!). However, if you would like a more opaque texture, you may opt to skip step 4.

5. Second Color.

Using a round brush, pick up the dip powder of choice (a different color) and gently dap it from tip to midline.

6. Repeat (Optional).

Repeat step 5 if necessary. (optional)

7. Cure Each Nail.

Cure Time: LED (30 seconds), UV/LED (60-90 seconds), UV (2 minutes) depending on lamp wattage.

8. Top it off with Top Coat!

If you've yet decided between our different topcoats, we've attached a summary below.

  • Original Gel Top Coat - This needs to be cured and then wiped with alcohol after its final curing.

  • No Cleanse Gel Top Coat -This needs to be cured, but no wiping (cleansing) is necessary.

  • iGel Matte Top Coat - This needs to be cured, and does not require cleansing. However, we do recommend using the No Cleanse Top Coat before the Matte.

Cure Time: LED (30 seconds), UV/LED (60-90 seconds), UV (2 minutes) depending on lamp wattage.

For Gel & Acrylic

1. Prep Your Nail.

2. Base Color.

You may use gel or acrylic as your base color.

If you're using gel as a base color, there is no need to buff the gel since you’re applying the ombré gel directly. However for acrylic, you need to buff the surface. so that there is a rough finish for the gel to hold onto.

3. Buff with Love (for acrylic only).

Don’t buff too much. If smooth, the gel won't have anything to grab onto the powder, it’ll separate and peel.

4. Easy Ombré Gel

Apply one coat of Easy Ombré Gel. Then, flash cure each nail with the ombré gel for 10 seconds with the Hybrid Pro (Kindly note that it may take a little longer with other lamps).

5. Clear Dip.

Quickly dip it into clear dip powder. (optional)

Note: The clear powder helps the color blend nicely by adding to its translucency (especially at the faded area!). However, if you would like a more opaque texture, you may opt to skip step 4.

7. Repeat (Optional).

Repeat step 5 if necessary. (optional)

8. Cure Each Nail.

Cure Time: LED (30 seconds), UV/LED (60-90 seconds), UV (2 minutes) depending on lamp wattage.

9. Top it off with Top Coat!

Alternative Method

1. Bottom-Up.

Paint the bottom color half on the cuticle area with a gel polish color of choice, but stop at the midline. Afterward, take a different color of gel polish and paint the upper portion of your nail from the midline to tip of the nail.

2. Blend.

Use the ombré brush to gently blend the center of the colors together. You may also use a sponge to slowly dot the center where the two colors meet and it will blend the colors,

3. Top it off with Top Coat.

We highly recommend using the No Cleanse Gel Top Coat for a shiny finish. You may also additionally add the iGel Matte Top Coat.

Note: When using this method, building an apex must be achieved before step one (How to Build an Apex).

This alternative method may be easy, however, the sponge might not be able to bring out a smooth texture and cause uneven layering.
